Consider this:

A married couple is celebrating their 20th anaversary. On the way home from dinner, they are hit by a drunk driver. The husband is killed, leaving the wife to care for their 3 children.

Suddenly, the main source of income for the family is lost. The children have lost their father, and the mother has lost the companionship of her husband.

The damages they recieve from a lawsuit are not profits... it is to compensate them for loss: in effect, to bring them to the status quo.
