From Toronto or the East coast, about US $1,200.00 round trip.

Hostels and Homestays can be had for Yen 2500 to 3500 per night, or sometimes more, depending on the level of luxury. If you choose a Hostel, you should purchase your International Youth hostel membership in your home country, so you have it when you get to Japan.

Hotels can be had for $50.00 to $80.00 (Yen 5000 to 8000) per night in the business hotels or Minshuku 民宿 みんしゅく (the Japanese bed and breakfast).

The Ryokan 旅館 りょかん (The traditional Japanese Hotel), is usually more expensive, and the Western style hotels, such as the Okura or the Hilton, will be much more expensive.

In some rural areas, Ryokan are cheaper, but you should look for bargains before you go. Japan is really a place where you should have reservations, because spur of the moment travel in Japan can be expensive.

Every day, you will want money for the trains, food, personal items, sightseeing, and shopping. If you live like a Japanese, you cna eat rather cheaply, like $20.00 (Yen 2000), per day for food. If you get a Japanrail pass (300 in Canadian dollars), it only covers the JR trains, not the subways, or private railways, so you may still need about $10.00 a day for trains or busses.

Most sightseeing places charge a fee (3 to 5 dollars), and your Japanese friends will want to go to Karaoke (20 to 30 dollars per person with food, a little more for drinks).

If you want to shop, dine well, do a lot of sightseeing, then you should estimate about $3,000.00 for 7 days, which includes your airfare.

If you go on a package 5 day tour with friends, then you can probably spend $200.00 per day for fun and food, and maybe $1,000.00 or so for the package tour and flights.

Search for good deals, and good luck!

You can buy a second hand kimono is some shops for as little as 2,000 yen (about $20.00 American) and from there the price just goes up. A new formal kimono can easily run several hundred to several thousand dollars, and the most expensive kimonos can go into the tens of thousands of dollars. This is before you add in the accessories, such as an obi, the undergarments, obi cords, etc. Most visitors are able to find beautiful kimonos in the second hand shops because these garments are nearly always well cared for by the previous owners, and sometimes show very little real wear. The price of any kimono, used or otherwise, depends a great deal on the type of fabric, the type of decorative work and any specialized detailing. Most kimonos for women are one size fits most and are measured by the width of the shoulders (the kimono itself is a t-shaped garment that falls in a straight line from the shoulders). The average kimono can usually accommodate a fairly wide range in size and body shapes. The garment is fitted for wearing by carefully tucks and pleating that adjusts length and width for the individual wearing it. For people with very odd sizes that fall well outside of the Japanese norm (such as extremely tall men or women, or sumo wrestlers), they may need to have a kimono custom made to fit them.
