My computer is giving me an error when it starts up. It says there is an error with the hard driver, please consult your troubleshooting guide. Then it says to press enter to continue. I don't have the troubleshooting guide anymore and I don't know what to do. It's been fine for a while even though that error has been coming up, but now it has been shutting off when it's not in use for a while sometimes and it freezes up when it goes on standby. It's a gateway computer with windows XP. If anyone has any ideas on what I should/could do, please let me know. Thanks.

try booting aain and see if you can bring up a boot menu - maybe F12 maybe F11, then you might see you can boot to the hdd you have been...and the floppy and cd...you might also have a diagnostic partition you can boot to that will be able to load/fix the prob...

You could get a new hard drive. You can get someone to fix it, but it's probably not the best solution. Gateway computers aren't really good.

Gateway computers are glitchy and crappy. You most likely need a new hard drive - but best bet is to get a new computer and stay away from stinkin' Gateway.

Without giving the complete and exact error message, the best thing I can suggest is to re-install the operating system.

It would probably fix everything if you format your hard drive and start over, reinstall the operating system. If you are still having problems, get a new hard drive for your computer.

Ypu might run some onboard diagnostics. I'mnot sure if Gateway has them, but it would be good to rule out hard drive failure. But I agree-reinstall.

try to check if all hard drives are properly inserted in their slots. then, if still that error occurs, try to reinstall windows, better reformat to check if your HD is really working well. maybe, it already has some bad sectors on it.

try to reinstall OS first, don't worry your files won't be lost. If it doesn't wor, back up your files in another HD or flash drives, then reformat your HD.

-ciao!!!

There is no such thing as a hard driver. It sounds like fixing a computer is beyond your abilities, so please take it to someone who can, like Geeksquad, or a friend.

You need to first know what problem it is, you can find out by testing your PC using "PC Doctor" :-)
