My brand new neice was just born on dec. 12 she came a month early and only weighed 5 pounds, She has just been diagnosed with bacterial meningitis she is on the way to texas children's hospital right now, and I'm going crazy, how bad is this, what is her chance of making it with no ling term problems, please be honest.

Meningitis is a very serious thing. But look on the bright side she was diagnosed early which gives her a better chance to overcome it. Here is a website that can give you some good info about it. Good luck and you & your family are in my prayers.

My neice had that when she was only a few months old and made a good recovery. She is now a healthy 6 year old. It's very scary and not all babies are as lucky as my neice. It might be a harder road for your neice because she is so young and premature, but it's possible she'll be fine. Hopefully she won't have any problems. Take a deep breath and try to relax a little. i dont know about bacterial meningites, but these are some of the complications of meningitis in any one,
Hearing loss or deafness
Brain damage
Loss of vision
Hydrocephalus

i had that i was a preemie also.she might have sum medical injuries like stunned growth,and some deficulties in learning. but im okay i turned out to be fine....hope for tha best and good luck!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
