The best thing I could say is for you to actually experience what your character has. Use your real emotions at a similar emotional event in your life.

The tip that I am going to give is to be comfortable with the character you are playing.Learn your lines well and watch a movie or two to get a few clues on using props. If it is your first time acting
and you enjoy doing it it is all worthwhile.

To be perfectly honest, and very candid, without knowing your current level, the amount of talent you have, and your personality, it would be difficult, if not impossible to give you any tips, other than to hire an acting coach or take some classes. Remember, there are no real shortcuts, you have to do the work.

Are you a complete novice?

I'll take the answer to that as a yes.

Learn some voice projection - so you can be heard

Take some dance lessons from a ballet class - so you have good posture

Practice learning lines - will stand you in good stead

If you only want to know for a one off play, then the best advice is just have fun. But always remember that you are there to entertain the people who paid to see you, not to make yourself feel better.

Your acting teacher is your BEST soruce for acting tips. Don't ask strangers as the information may conflict with what your acting teacher does in class.

Don't show your emotions, have them.

Trust your instincts.

It's impossible to listen too hard. (Laurence Oliver was asked what was the most important thing an actor could learn. He said, "How to listen.")

Keep studying; there's always more to learn.

And if you're just starting: project your voice so my deaf grandmother sitting in the back row can hear you.
