the best contraception would be abstinence but regardless if your going to have sex than you need dual protection the only 100% effective one is no sex other than that they are only 98% effective but if condoms and vaginal foam are used together than you increase 98% to 99%. The pill takes 1 month before protection begins but even at that you should still use a condom to protect you against STD's the only sure symptom that someone has an STD is no symptom at all. There are only 2 ways to protect yourself from disease and that would again be abstinence and condoms. Don't have sex with someone that you cant see yourself spending the rest of your life with its just not worth it.

Let us all be honest. You're first time means you are not on the pill and you will probably only use condoms. If your partner (whom you know and trust, hopefully) is also a first timer, I would focus on condoms with spermicide. I would also not let the sex continue on a regular basis without the female having some sort of birth control pill/shot whatever method. You really need both in this world. On another note, sex for the first time is scary and awkward. It won't be fun if the partner is a jerk and not worth it.

Use a condom, definitely. They do double duty- birth control and STD protection. If you want to use the spermicide ones, you should make sure you aren't allergic beforehand. Itchy rashes on your fingers aren't nearly as bad as itchy rashes on delicate areas, especially just after the first time you had sex.

You may want to double up, particularly if you are a paranoid freak like me. I like the pill, but there's also Depo Provera shots, diaphragms, IUDs, spermicide, spermicide foam... Lots of things that you can use at the same time you use a condom. Talk to your doctor if you want to go the hormonal route. Extra-special happiness: the right pill prescription also helps cramps.

MethodS! Multiple. You need three, and one MUST be a condom, so that you are protected against STDs.

For example
1) condom
2) spermicide
3) pill

Myself, I prefer
1) condom
2) vasectomy
3) pill

Condoms. You could back that up with birth control pills.

I hope it a special night for you!
