Can you close a laptop while it is on, without damaging the computer? If not, why?

Yes, you can.

However, you will need to set it up so that it won't shut off when it is closed. If you are on windows, right click the power icon (either an AC Adapter or a Battery, depending if it is plugged in or not) and choose the tab "Advanced." The settings for these things are there.

I'm pretty sure u can close it w/o damaging it. I think it kinda puts ur laptop in sleep mode until u open it again. I don't own a laptop but i have done this wit several laptops.

Yeah, I do it all the time. You can set it to stay on or stand-by or whatever from the Control Panel. Mine's turned on 24/7, the lid's closed about 18 of those.

If u mean close the lid. YEA. I do it all the time only when it has LOT OF BATTERY or its PLUG IN THE OUTLET because when u close it will sleep. If the sleep is too long like 20 - 30 min or less it hibernates.
