My computer was originally my sister's and being the pack rat she is (sarchasm sarchasm) she threw away all but the Winodws XP installation CD when she bought my computer several years ago. I know I could problably order the CD's online, but I don't like to give out my credit card number and I NEED to resore the computer to factory settings and have it in proper working order before the new semester (CD shipping would take much too long). Any suggestions, or should I just live with this patheitc peice of junk for yet another semester?

All you need is the original operating system CDs to reinstall the operating system - that is "factory settings". You may need a few extra drivers to get up and running afterwards though, but you can download those. So go ahead - use that Windows XP CD!

This may not work with your computer, I'm not sure what models have or don't have this option. But go into your control panel and click Performance and Maintenance. Once you're there, click System Restore. This is the part that I'm not sure about; some computers have an option to set the restore point at any date and other computers already have a set date. Try going through and see what date it is and do the system restore.

It depends on what type of computer it is... With mine, I don't need the recovery disks. Restart the computer, and when it shows the Windows Xp Screen start tapping the F10 key until it says system rocovery, and then it gives you the option to choose between a clean up, or a destructive recovery. If you want the entire thing to be like it was when it was first purchased, choose destructive recovery and it will lead you through the rest.

You will need the driversafter using the XP CD. Chipset, audio, video, network, modem, +any PCI cards. You can probably download the drivers on the manufacturer's website and put them on a CD. You may try to repair if you want to save data, but if not get the driversand format.
