Joe Sakic! He's been the team leader for over 14 years. NO ONE ever questions his passion and heart for the game of hockey. When the Avs are down, Sakic steps up and leads them forward. Whether by scoring goals or giving up scoring chances for others. Points really dont mean anything except on paper. Sakic will raise his stick when scoring a goal then move on. Joe Sakic best captain.

Saku Koivu at 5"10, 180lbs the biggest heart in the NHL today, also with 14 goals, 21 assists, and 35 points in 35 games and leading the team. his leadership on the ice and off the ice is unbelievable nobody really understands what this guy means to a team. hes been through allot over his career even battling cancer and beating it a few years ago. and last years playoffs when he got a high stick in the eye which really hurt the team and then they lost 4 in a row to the champs after leading the series 2 games to none. BIGGEST HEART IN THE NHL TODAY #11 SAKU KOIVU OF THE MONTREAL CANADIENS.

i think every captain helps their team in very different ways. it's a combination of points, leadership, attitude, etc... i think it's a really hard question to answer becasue each captain helps their team and therefore has special meaning to their team! a captain of a poor team can be just as good as the captain of one of the best.

Because of the constant movement (trades) in the NHL, this question doesn't mean as much as it would have 10 years ago. Captains are traded constantly so I don't know how much impact they can have anymore.

Are you only considering the top captain or Alternates as well. The Penguins coach chose to have all alternate captains this year.
