Well, I would go for English. You could also look into History or even Science. The question is what do you want to write about and do you want to have a working knowledge of it?
Best of luck in school.

I used to want to be a writer, and I took English. You get exposed to a lot of literature and theory. I never became a writer after that exposure, so I would recommend Journalism, where you have to write stories and recieve regular assignments. You could work for the school newspaper, too, and get real experience. Why bother with what has been written before: nothing is original, so you might as well write what comes from you.

i wanted to be a writer too and was studying journalism. then i pictured myself writing all day in a newsroom at a newspaper or mag (i worked as an intern at a newspaper) and couldnt see myself doing it.
if u wanna be a writer, u could study English or journalism. but if u wanna write a novel, i think u dont need formal training. just look at the woman who wrote harry potter!! u could always study communciations and then u would have a big background in writing, film, journalism, broadcasting, photography, so u can pick and choose.

I think a journalism major is the way to go. With an English degree most times you wind up teaching. It's actually a mass communications degree. I was just researching the same thing!

Most of the time English, however if you wanted to focus on a certain subject, say a time period, major in that time period. (World History for basics, Anthropology for other world cultures) Or if you wanted to write fiction many schools offer creative writing majors. But I'm sure everyone agrees English.

English, journalism, or creative writing. It depends on what sort of writer you want to be.

English or journalism. Also minor in something that will help further what you want to write about like psychology, or religion, or art, or history, or science.
