Baking soda can clean it,but make sure you don't get any of it inside the battery. Cleaning corrosion from the ends doesn't mean all of it is gone. Corrosion can travel all the way through the cable and seriously reduce conductivity. You might consider replacing the entire cable, and use some battery washers and some protective spray.

This happens normally. If it is waaaay too much... like a major buildup in a minimal amount of time.. get it checked... if it has been a long while since the terminals were cleaned... all you need to do is disconnect the terminals from the cables and use a terminal cleaner to rid the corrosion

this build up is because the negative terminal is the anode side of the battery you shouldnt let it build up because this can affect the cranking amps, and make you car hard to start. take a toothbrush with some baking soda and brush it real good this will help reduce the build up

That is the ground to the chassis, and there is dismilar metals present, and then the terminal isn't clean. Any of those will cause it to corrode. Clean it off really good, and get some terminal coating spray. That has helped mine out.
