Actually, you're not seeing the big picture here. The reason we are doing so badly is because the *positives* like hard work and intelligence are so far down the list--both of them.

The List, as I best see it for the whole world, seems to be:

--Power-lust. People wanting to be *control freaks*, doing the "my way or the highway" thing, going for World Conquest and Damn the Consequences.

--Greed. Not just people being selfish mind you, but folks insisting on "more for me" at the expense of everyone and everything else.

--Evangelical/Fundamentalist Intolerance. You know, the whole "my obsessive delusion is better than yours, and if you *don't* agree with me entirely I WILL KILL YOU" crap. Be it KKK, Taliban, Wahabbi, Rammist, Zionist, Southern Baptist, whatever, at the end of the day, a lynching is a lynching and a suicide bombing is a suicide bombing. You still have *dead people* to bury because some idiot went crazy and just *couldn't stand* the notion that others might be *less obsessive and miserable* than he is.

--Betrayal and Backstabbing. Mainly your "business as usual" for the filthy richest of the filthy rich, but hey, it matters because it screws *bad people* after good ones out of being able to Earn a Living. Doesn't matter whether it is outsourcing, shenanigans from the military/industrial complex or forcing folks to turn to crime and drugs to *get by*, it's all the same, it's all about telling people "Nope, we can't let you have *any* money or earn *any* sort of living, and we have no real reason to say this besides 'Because we Said So', thank you."

Then, *maybe*, fifth down on the list, you get Hard Work.

And Intelligence? Please. That is a *threat* to the Powers that Be, if it makes the List at all, it's somewhere between 10th and 20th in priority, and then *only if* the Rich and Filthy get dibs on *controlling* that intellect.

Seriously. Trust me on this one. The positive and hopeful things we are known for just aren't *making it* in terms of global priorities these days....and some would argue that they *never have made it historically*.

I don't think either is valued as much as it should be. Popularity is valued more than intelligence or hard work, and that's why we have incompetent idiots getting elected to high offices. It's as if no one has matured beyond high school, where intelligent students are viewed as "nerds" and everyone envies the "cool" people. Those cool people don't have to have brains or work hard; they just get by on their looks and reputations. Until we stop applying this mentality to the adult world, it will continue to be a mess.

quite the contrary. i think the world is doing badly because we don't value hard work or intelligence. kids are dropping out of school to get their geds......because it is the easy way out. what kind of infomercials flood the television late at night? get rich quick schemes. how to get the most bang for no buck.
not everyone is super smart...and not all people have a great work ethic. the hard part is getting those with the intelligence hooked up with those who are dedicated enough to follow a good plan to its fruition. that leads to success.

NO! the world is doing so badly because we the people have empowered certain intelligent people called POLITICIANS ,to make decisions that make us work harder and less intelligent . It seems Politicians and Diapers have one thing in common, they both should be changed regularly and for the same reason.

Faulty premise. You're assuming that we value one over the other. The only thing I can say is that hard work may compensate for lower intelligence. Not everyone can be highly gifted.

that is a really good question. I work in a restaraunt where our kitchen staff is mostly brazilian. these people are some of the hardest workers I have ever met. however, some of them barely read/speak english. not so good...when our food starts coming out wrong and the orders take too long because it is hard for them to understand. So why doesn't management hire more 'americans'? because they want weekends off and don't want to work 70 hr workweeks. (This is just an example) I'm not saying that all brazilians or all americans are like this.

No, I think the world is doing bad because we are valuing belief over compromise, understanding, and tolerance.

no, i believe that it isn't to do with us considering hard work to be more important than other things but because there is so much hatred, ignorance, war, poverty, famine and innocent people being killed whilst the rich who don't care about the poor, murderers and killers, racists, homophobics, abusers get away with committing such henious behaviour and actions
