Your quite likely to get a credit note, not cash, especially with jewelry due to the nature of theft. Most stores are more understanding around this time of year.

Maybe they will let you exchange for something else, but it would probably be better, if you could obtain the receipt from the person who gave you the gift

That's the great thing about the week or two after Christmas....you get something you don't like or can't use...you can return it for something else........sometimes cash sometime in store credit...which is usually just as good as cash...depending on the store....

most stores check their branches for a list of all the dates and times when the item was bought.
You could chance your luck and try and give them the correct information.
If you do, make sure the packaging is immaculate, not to agrivate them any further.... and try to do it when the boss isn't in !!
