Many people play the free, browser-based game Runescape (www.runescrape.com), though it is not very graphically pleasing. What is most attractive about it is that is entirely free, and has a very large player base.
Another game that is still in the closed BETA testing stage (a closed, or private, BETA testing is one that is invitation only) that will be free to play upon release in the next few months is Dungeon Runners (www.dungeonrunners.com). I was invited into BETA testing, and this game has average graphics, and is much better than nearly all other free RPG's out there (and better than quite a few paid-for RPG's, as well). The catch is the free membership is restricted of many of the game's advanced items and levels that the paying members ($5/month) will have access to.
Another free, mostly text-based RPG is the Kingdom of Loathing (www.kingdomofloathing.com). The graphics here consist mainly of stick figure people and poorly drawn (though often humorous) structures and items. The game makes up for this, however, with creative and very funny writing, descriptions, item names, and quests.
Another free game that is not really an RPG but more a text-based strategy game is Kings of Chaos (www.kingsofchaos.com). In this you build up your army of whatever race you choose, and attack other players to steal gold, which you use to build up your base and armory. A lot in this game is based on luck, and often times you have to join user-made "clans" to get many units in a short time to rise quickly through the game's ranks.
There's three games for you to check out now, and one to look forward to in the coming months! Hope you have fun!
