Yes, the XBox 360 is backwards compatible with SOME games, but not by the hard drive's mere presence...you need to download additional software (which is why you need the hard drive) to enable certain titles to work. The link below should tell you more (including a list of which XBox games are playable on the 360):

The link below shows which xbox games are compatible with the Xbox 360 (a lot, actually). To play the original Xbox games, you probably need to get the latest patches (no Xbox Live account required). I just played Halo 2 on the Xbox 360 and it works perfectly. Put the hard drive first and then do your buisiness. You may have to configure the Xbox 360 to use the hard drive.

It won't directly play I don't think any of them, and to my understanding this is intentional; to encourage authors of old games to upgrade their graphics and stuff so that they'll look better on the 360 (if they just automatically did it, then almost no developers would improve their old games). Instead, they will let you download a new version of the game file that is compatible with the same game data, but may support the ability to see farther in distances or something like that, and even more importantly, should have been properly tested with the newer processor. The hard drive will hold your new copy of the game so that you don't have to download it every time you turn it on. I don't have a 360 so I haven't familiarized myself with how to get the updates; I assume you need Xbox Live to download the updates (or a friend with it that can get them for you)
Some of the newer games that were released recently were made to work on both, so things like the Burger King games should work on either one straight out of the box.
