i think the easiest way to get to know people (and probably the most fail-safe, since some people arent going to be up on current events, politics, hold certain beliefs or care about some issues you may bring up) is simply to ask after introducing yourself, either what do you do (which in some circles is slightly distasteful, but most of the time is just fine) or if you want to set yourself apart....what it is they are interested in. I think it comes off as much more interested and engaging since you leave the conversation open to whatever it is they are passionate about...and most people love to talk about themselves anyway (example being this rant im making about a fairly innocent question).

A warm hello and introduction of yourself then ask or tell something about the environment. Better yet, tell a compliment. Example

That dress looks nice on you!

Have a wonderful new year ahead!

Most people usually do this to start a conversation, they talk about some problem that happened to them.

"Hi, I'm _____ What's your name?"

"What do you like to do for fun/in your spare time?"

"Where are you going to school?"

You can almost ALWAYS build questions off of those three questions.

Don't talk too much about yourself, otherwise people tend to think that you're self-absorbed. Relax. Keep the conversation balanced.

first we have to murder the etiquette biiitch (first), this is sooo bad, i remember going to a bar and being old enough to have a drink and soon: lo-and be-hold out comes:( this)= you!!! can't talk about family, religion, or politic in a bar? so that is the hidden agenda and i guess everywhere that anyone can find someone to talk to there will be speech police standing there with mace to get it right lots-o-luck with the conversation

Say this, " How much does a polar bear weigh?" Then they will say, "I don't know". You'll will then say, "Enough to break the ice. Hi, my name is [insert your name here]."
