It's not bad to use bottled DRINKING water to mix with formula but babies don't need water until 6 months old and not distilled. It doesn't have the fluoride that tap water has so most Dr's recommend filtered tap for teeth development. There is also Nursery water you can get that is purified and fluoridated. It is found next to the formula at the grocery store.

Distilled water is actually water that has been heated up to the point of being nothing but steam, (pure H2O) then cooled down and collected. Sterilized water is just water that has had microorganisms killed. Yes, there are not the minerals in distilled water that you get in other waters, but do you really need them in your water? Does your baby? Don't you think that food, and vitamins for those of us that take them, give us enough minerals? There is really very little minerals in water that we "need" and none that we cannot get elsewhere. Besides, there are also heavy metals in all other forms of water that we DON'T need! Hello Alzheimer's and multiple sclerosis. Go with distilled. Your baby is getting everything else he or she needs from the formula.

"Breastfed babies do not need water - keep in mind that breastmilk is 88% water. Even in the first few days after birth, before mom's milk has "come in", colostrum is all that is needed to keep baby well hydrated (assuming baby is nursing effectively). Per the American Academy of Pediatrics, "Supplements (water, glucose water, formula, and other fluids) should not be given to breastfeeding newborn infants unless ordered by a physician when a medical indication exists... During the first 6 months of age, even in hot climates, water and juice are unnecessary for breastfed infants and may introduce contaminants or allergens."
"In addition, breastfed babies do not require water when it is very hot outside, assuming baby is allowed to nurse as needed. Baby can get all the liquids needed via breastmilk. A number of studies have determined that an exclusively breastfed baby does not need extra water - these studies have been done in various locations (both humid and dry) at temperatures ranging from 22-41°C (71.6-105.8°F) and 9-96% relative humidity [see references below].
"Note: Formula fed babies do not routinely need extra water. Some sources do suggest offering water to a formula fed baby when it is very hot outside (though baby may prefer to get extra water from more frequent feeding), or when baby is sick with a fever (consult baby's doctor for guidelines)."

Distilled or not, you really don't need to give water to your baby, but if you do, just use boiled tap water. Distilled water is void of any nutrients at all, and really won't do anything for your baby, so you might as well not give him/her any at all.

No one should drink distilled water. "Do not drink distilled water. Distillation may not remove all contaminating chemicals. It does remove minerals that are essential to health. The water will then leach minerals from your body, causing deficiencies. This will eventually cause an abnormally acidic environment, which can cause serious chronic disease."

It's bad to give ANYONE distilled water. The reason you need water is for the disolved minerals - and distilled water has none. It has nothing your body needs.

Most babies under a year old shouldn't get water, they should be breastfed.
If you must mix formula in a jam, you should use distilled water or filtered water.
