I have been present for many births and then in March of last year, was a coach for my cousin when I decided that I really should get paid to do this! Everyone was very supportive and my cousin said that of all the people that were there for her...I had given her the best support and information that she had.
So, I checked into it and started doing a lot of research and reading etc. It is fairly easy to do and from what I hear it is a very rewarding experience.
I was just getting into the education part of it when I found out that I was pregnant...so I have put it on hold for now....but plan to continue with it in the future.
It is definately something you should check into. If you need some good info, go to the DONA (Doulas of North America) website.
Good luck!

I had both a midwife and my mother as my doula at my labor, i wouldn't have gotten through it without them. it was just comforting to know people who knew what to expect and what was happening where there. I acted as my cousins Doula when she gave birth to her son a few weeks ago and it went really smoothly, mostly i helped her do relaxation, massaging the feet seemed to really make her relax and help her contractions become regular and close together, and answered any questions she had, i stayed there from when she went into the hospital till just after the baby was born, it was amazing. i would love to be a doula, of course thats easy to say when you've only dealt with family.. good luck!

My mother is a doula, she really enjoys it. I think it is such an awesome job. Birth is such an amazing time and you get to be there through it.
