I think the question to ask yourself is this -- have I always been this way? It was a great revelation to me to finally admit to myself that I have always been a night person, always. I can get by on a normal schedule just fine and have for many years, but cut loose from a fixed schedule I will stay up late and sleep late, always. And when I'm working at home, which I've done on and off for several years, I always do my best work after 9 or 10 pm. I can get more work done between 10pm and 1am than I can between 10am and 5pm.
Over the years I have taken to polling people on this, and people who strongly identify as either morning or evening people usually say the same thing, that they've always been that way. My father confirmed this with me -- he said that even when i was three years old I hated going to bed, and I was a complete zombie in the morning.
I haven't seen any research on this, but I know lots of shrinks, and they all just kind of shrug and say that it seems to be a physical disposition thing that people just learn to live with.

I am not a night owl! I am exactly the opposite, but i know many people who are and i think that everyone has an internal clock that causes them to think more clearly and be alert at certain times. My husband is a night owl and loves to chit chat at late hours, but i on the other hand pop out of bed and can do my best early in the morning. The only reason i am not vegging on the couch right now is that i have been doing so all day because of the holidays and am in desperate need of some human interaction that is not on a ten month old level. You are not weird, it could have something to do with your ancestry or the way you were raised and adapted to. If you look at hunter and gathers then you will see an adaptation to being awake when their pray is awake. Or, people like my grandmother who had to take care of my uncle who was paralyzed and needed most attention at night. Even though my uncle has been dead for 15 years, she still stays up all night and sleeps all day. You can look at it from an anthropological point of view or a social evolutionary point of view, either way it happens to many people.

yeah, me too. I'll start doing things late into the evening and early night and get more done than if it was early in the morning. I do however, take a spell in the mid-morning where I can concentrate and get alot done but not like I can at night.

I feel the same way. I always feel that I am not at my best during the morning hours. It's always at night.

I agree with you. I have a 2nd shift job and I love it. No alarm clocks and no hurrying off to bed early. My body just naturally likes to wake up at mid-morning. No point fighting it.
