disconnect it from the net (if you're on DSL/CABLE, physically disonnect the line from your ocmputer)
run a spyware/adware/trojan scannre (ie adaware or spybot search and destroy)
and run a virus scan of your computer.
if they both didn't pick up anything then there is no other way to tell.
in the mean time, get yourself a router that has a built in firewall.

... If something is not working right, or if you are running slow, or things are missing. If you dont know what the hell to look for then your not gonna ever know. If you knew what to look for and you thought someone was watching you over your connection you could go into command prompt and type netstat and look at all the solid tcp/ip connections..
