I drive an older model Grand Prix (92) and it recently started to mess up. The RPMs will jump up and down even when it's iddling. It will shut off when I'm driving but it will start right back up. Does anyone know what this might be?

You need two items to make the engine run. You need fuel and ignition. If either is missing or intermittant, you will not be able to go very far. If you are seeing the TACH jump around, you may have an electrical misfire somewhere in the ignition. If you run out of fuel, or have contaminated fuel, like water in the gas, you will have intermittant engine operation. The TACH will not show correct RPM if you are trying to run with contaminated fuel. You would be wise to add fresh fuel to the gas tank, and check for good regular spark at the spark plugs while trying to start the car.

92 is obd 1. You need to have your codes scanned even if the check engine lite is off. Is this car injected or carb. ?? makes a difference in possible causes ?? I would also check the pickup for the ignition . It is inside the distributor. You will need someone with an ohm meter to test it.

Intermittent electrical problems. A real ***** to find. Start by having a good mechanic look for any error codes stored in the computer, and go from there.

Get a tune up done, also have the fuel filter changed, and maybe even clean the throttle body. Good luck.

First I would go to a gas station and fill it with overpriced high test. Next pour in STP gas treatment...drive safely and rev the engine to clean out crap.
