Go to Start, Settings, Control Panel, Power Management.
Review all settings there.
Occasionally, I type too fast and issue commands too close together. The PC doesn't know where to go, so it freezes. I am forced to power off. Sometimes the power button won't work. In this case, you have to hold the button in for 6-8 seconds. Eventually, it will turn off. Then, to be sure memory is totally cleared, I turn off power at the surge protector. Wait a minutes before turning everything back on.

You can if you push it in and hold it for a lenght of time, say about 10 seconds. However, doing this runs the risk of corrupting data and/or your hard drive.
