We are going on vacation this summer and I was thinking about going to Amsterdam. Legal pot aside (because I actually don't smoke), what are some cool things about the Netherlands/Amsterdam that I can consider doing if I decide to travel there?

In Amsterdam, you should go to:

Rijksmuseum with the Night Watch by Rembrandt.
Van Gogh Museum with an incredible collection of Vicent van Gogh paintings.
Take a (boat) tour along the canals
Visit a Diamond Factory
The Nieuwe Kerk (where Monarchs have been invested)
Don´t miss the Anne Frank House and Museum
Check the Flower Market

and if you have time go to Volendam and Marken where people still wears traditional clothes.

And most important: enjoy it and enjoy the Dutch people and their hospitality.

There is more to Amsterdam than smoking. Many fine museums, Helen Keller's house, great restaurants, real friendly people who all speak English, canals that go every where. Public transportation is easy to use. Hotels are a little expensive but you can still find good deals if you search hard enough. I just took my kid's on the best vacation ever in the Netherlands, we rented a house boat for a week that slept 8 (4 bedrooms) it was fantastic and we cruised right through the center of Amsterdam. My kids will never forget that trip.

I don't smoke either and had a great time in Amsterdam. It has lots of nice things to see! You can see the Wax Museum of Madame Tussaud, the Rijks Museum and others if you are interested. There are also some Sex Museums as well and sure the Red Light District that you can see, even if it's jsut for curiosity.
Now the weather is bad, of course, but in summer, it is a nice thing to go on a short cruise through the canals. They show you then several attractions like Anne Frank's house, for example. And the canals are lovely anyway. The whole city is! Have a great time!
