Not a whole lot. You lose 5 points when you ask a question, so you need to keep a supply of them for that. You reach a new level (up to level 7) when you have a certain number of points. A new level will let you ask and answer more questions in a day. Other than that it's really just "bragging rights" to have the most points on Yahoo answers or among your friends or whatever. Personally, it's fun to try to reach a new level but other than that I don't take the points too seriously.

I think it's just for people who have too much time on their hands to feel good about being number 1 on the Leaderboard. As if this will fund their retirement.
