My 5 week old baby has a rash on her face and the back of her neck that looks like tiny pimples. Is this normal? Could it be the baby ance I heard about? Should I take her to the doctor? Also I am breastfeeding her and I know it's normal for her not to poop everyday, but it's been a week, should I worry yet?

The rash is most likely baby acne. The rash around her neck you can treat by using baby powder. Apply the baby powder to your hands first because it is bad for the baby to breathe that. Apply it to your hands and rub it on her neck. It will help it go away. As for not having pooped in a week...not good. It is okay if a baby doesn't poop every day, but a week is too long. Speak to your pediatrician about this. Imagine if you didn't go for a week?

I would call the doctor. Your daughter could have baby acne, or it could be hormones passing from you to her, or it could be something in your diet that she is reacting to.

It is not normal for breastfed babies to be constipated. If she is straining or is really fussy during a bowel movement this is something you should discuss with her pediatrician. Is she having plenty of wet diapers and gaining weight well? Are you supplementing with formula or are you strictly breastfeeding?

It may be that she only has one bowel movement per week. Some babies are just that way, the tend to go less often. I would worry though, if she goes any longer than you have stated and if when she does have a bowel movement it is not a lot and she is uncomfortable. That could be an issue that she is not feeding enough or that she has a sensitivity to something that you are eating, or that her little GI system is having some problems that need to be looked into by a doctor.

At her age, she should be feeding frequently, every 1.5-3 hours or at least 8 feeding in a 24 hour period. Again her wet diapers and bowel movements and weight gain usually indicate if she is getting enough.

One of the culprits could be a milk sensitivity or allergy that your daughter might be having. This could explain the rash and the infrequent bowel movements. I would cut out dairy for awhile if your baby is really fussy and see if this makes a difference or not.

You may also want to talk with a lactation consultant about any breastfeeding issues you have.

I am attaching two articles from la leche league that talk about bowel movements and allergies of breastfed infants.

Heat rash will usually last for like a week of so ..when my daughter was 3 month she had a bad heat rash on her back n stomach ..I took her to the doctor n he said not to worry about it unless she is unhappy ..he told me I could put cornstarch on her body to prevent alot of sweating which let me tell you it really worked, her rash was gone in 2 days

I would worry she hasn't pooped in a week.

I would first try to give her a tsp of Karo syrup in two oz of form, that should kick in that day. Do that three times a day until she gets reg.

You can also give her half apple juice and half water. Once a day or so. But no other sort of juice, not grape, you want it to be as clear as possible.

All of this i am telling you was told to me by my newborn ped. So all of it is ok to do.

If it doesn't start working soon, go to the pharmacy and buy some infant suppositories. That works like instantly.

My newborn was very constipated at first. It was her form. So i am thinking it could be what you are eating and then she is getting through the breast milk. I would talk to your doctor about what you can eat to help her go.

As for the acne and little bumps that is completely normal. There really isn't anything you can do about it either.

The rash is the baby acne that you've heard of. Just be sure not to pop or let anyone pop it. As for her not pooping I would call her doctor. That's not normal for anyone. A few days, but not a week.

My son only pooped 1 or 2 times a week when I was nursing and the hormones in the breastmilk made him break out in baby pimples a lot more than my daughter who was formula fed.

The rash is normal, also known as prickly heat and it will come and go, generally in the same area.

As for the poop not happening, it could mean that baby is constipated. Try contacting your advice nurse and see if there is a solution for this and/or is it normal.

I would take your baby to see the GP if she hasnt poo'd in a while - if you are breastfeeding try to increase the intake of fruits / vegtables - as this will go into your milk and pass to her - but check with your dr to make sure she is ok.
Are the spots red? put a tumbler / glass on them and press down slightly - to check for meningitis - not to worry you but check to be sure - it doesnt hurt.
If they are white, they are probably fine, and maybe related to the breastmilk - keep an eye on them or mention them to the dr when you see them. You could try Aqueous cream if you think they are itchy for her
