Take a lighter and and burn the tip(not the stick)until it is lit

you need some kind of holder for it.
the ashes will fall off as it burns down and make a mess.
they sell the stick holders at the dollar stores.
light it until it flames then blow on the tip of it when you figure the coal will continue on it's own like the cone ones.

light the fat side, blow the fire out, it will glow and put off a smoke that smells good. The ashes will drop though and maybe hot so put it somewhere safe. Perferably an insence holder.

I place it in the a vase and then put the whole thing in the sink, since it drops ash and I have no idea how long it will take to extinguish itself and wouldn't want a fire.
You can use a mug, candle holder as well.

Just light the end. Blow out the flame. Place the incense where the ashes can collect without leaving a mess.

you light with a match or lighter not the wood end
