When you boil it all down, it is a matter of choice. Personally, if I am going to be away for a couple of hours, I will turn the monitor off but leave the PC on. Any more than that I will shutdown.

Leaving a laptop on for too long may damage the internals, even with a cooling pad!
A PC takes a lot of electricity, even when not being operated, plus when you shut down, you are allowing the system to reset files, most physical memory, save your settings, plus your computer will last a lot longer!
I run 4 different systems and turn them all off at night....but I have several system cleaning progs that run when system is shut down!

I think a laptop should be ok if you leave it on over 12 hours, as long as it's in a cool place. A desktop would be fine as well. If it's a Windows PC then you should shut it down every once in a while, maybe once a week, but there are many people who just leave it on forever and it's fine.

In theory, you could leave a PC on indefinitely. Every time you re-start the system, it clears the RAM and resets some values in some files. It is a good idea to re-start every now and then. It is debated how often to do so. I turn mine off each day, sometimes several times a day. You should note that it is hard on the hard-drive to be turned off and on repeatedly. If you run your unit at high temps, definitely turn it off. Heat kills electronics. If it runs cool enough, don't worry too much.

a lap top you should shutdown every 12 hrs or so just to let it cool down but my old boss has a lap top Win XP that he has shutdown only every month or so with no ill affect that I have found.. A Desktop you could let run forever cooling wise however Windows machines need that reboot to clean all the memory dumps out from the faulty programming.. :)

2 of my committed desktops have been on continuously for 15 months, without blue demonstrate or crash #a million. Now, for somebody such as you, who in straightforward terms makes use of it each and every few hours or so...turn it off...and reboot it once you like it. the two way, if the workstation is unquestionably maintained, it won't make a sprint bit difference.
