It depends on the 6YO, and the child's parents. Never leave your child alone with the gerbil. It would be a good learning experience if the parents are will to take on the responsibility of caring for this pet! Also note, they only live (I believe) about 3 years...

NO! Gerbils need tender handling and clean cages. They can and will bite if mistreated, and they are likely to get away and disappear into your home at the hands of a child who can become distracted and not close the cage door.. A six year old is not ready for the responsibility of any pet, but for simple enjoyment, and making sure the child understands hands off, a fish tank is nice.
If the fish die, they are replaced easily, and inexpensively, and when the child loses interest... and they will.... its not a big deal.

No animal makes a good pet for a 6 year old. Pets are family pets.

I would say a hamster instead - ask the store owner which one is lazy - the lazy ones usually don't bite and don't mind if they are left alone for a long time. lol. Plus they can't run fast like gerbals who are like bullets and if they bite your child and take off good luck ever finding them again. Anyway - I hope this helps!

yes, yes, yes, so long as they are shown how yo look aftr them and are reasonable resposible. Do make sure an adult checks their care too though, 6 yr olds have not got a big responsibility gene inbuilt
