When you get your marriage license returned from being recorded take it to the DMV and they will change your license, then go to the Social Security office and change that too. You'll need to get your license changed first before your Social Security card because you'll need a photo ID in your new name. Carry the Marriage Certificate with you to the DMV and the Social Security office.

I took my husbands name when we married. Before I was in a serious relationship I always thought that if I got married I would keep my own name and my own identity blah blah blah. When I got into a serious relationship with my husband it made me think more about the whole name thing. I decided to take his name because I wanted our family to a united front. I didn't want there to be a lot of confusion over names and such with the children, especially when they go to school. We are all Barnes' and thats how I like it. I am proud to be a part of my husbands family and don't think it is girly to take on my husbands name. We gave our Son Hunter as his middle name which was my maiden name to honor my family. We feel good about how we have chosen to do things and I wouldn't change a thing. Kim PS: I should make a point to say that I assumed his name and did not do a legal name change. This means that I have his name on all my ID except my SIN and my birth certificate. As much as I wanted his name I couldn't stand the thought of it changing on my birth certificate. I was born a Hunter and that shouldn't change when I get married.

When you get your marriage certificate take it to the Social Security Office and apply for a new card. After the new card has been issued you may change your name on any legal documents that require identification etc. Otherwise you will be able to use his name on unoffical or informal documents only. Your name will not change otherwise because the the certificate will show both your names.

oh. it's simple. you can start signing your name with his now, but it will take a while to do the paper work (month or so). After you do your vows and everything, your marriage certificate will be sent to the court house. You need to go get a copy. Take your copy of the marriage certificate and whatever other ID you will need to the Social Security department, where they will change your name on your SS card. then, when you get your SS card in the mail, you can go to the DMV and get a new ID made with your new name, also change it on checks, etc.

Take your marriage certificate, your drivers license, your birth certificate and your proof of residence to the local DMV, they will issue you a new license in your married name, no problem. Then take your new license and marriage certificate to the voter registration office and they will change your name on the voter registration card, no problem. Next contact your creditors and advise them to issue new cards in the married name, provide them with the documents, no problem. Same with Social Security Admin.
Or you can just leave everything as it is, so that in a few years, you won't have to undo all this, after the divorce.

Your name will change automatically. But, you do need to take a your marriage certificate to the DMV, the Social Securiy office and to have your name changed at any bank. Most of these places will not accept a copy so make sure you take your original! Congrats! :)

If you choose to take his name, when you sign the marriage license after the ceremony, you'll legally have his name. Then you just have to take care of getting it changed on your Drivers License, credit cards, bank account, payroll at work, contact social security and let them know, etc. Make a photocopy of the marriage license to carry with you or fax, as needed, to those that will need proof of the legality of your name change.

It's a pain to do, but most of us (women) do it at least once in our lives.

your name does not automatically change. you have to wait until you get the official marriage certifiacte. take that to the social security office to change. credit cards can be done now. they dont ask for proof. as for your employer..you have to wait on the certificate also.

Take your marriage license with you because you might have to show it. Change it on your banking, credit cards, driver's license, SS card and anything else you need to change. It's not that hard, but take the marriage license, particularly for the diver's license and the SS card!
