Actually the trailer makes no shifts at all...but the tractor does...

It depends on a number of factors such as number of gears in the transmission and also if it has a split rear end (differential) a split will give each gear two ratios a high and a low...so if the transmission has 6 gears the split gives them 12...

large off highway trucks can have 56 or more forward gears and 12 or more reverse.

Most highway 18 wheelers seldom have as many as 12 in the transmission and split gives them 24...

Any where from 5 to 21. Some of the super truckers run 13-18; it's very rare to find the granddady 21.

If the load is not properly restrained it could make several shifts before before getting far enough out of balance to overturn the trailer on a sharp curve.

most large fleets use 8 or 9 speeds, 10 spd is very common ,15 speed is used by heavy haulers because you split the low side, 13 & 18 spds are for the high performance owner operators (2050 pounds of torque!)-hope this helps

Trailer has no motor transmission no gears to shift...Now you must mean the tractor that pulls the trailer.
