Labor is only painful up to the point where the anaestheologist comes in and does his/her magic (a.k.a. epidural). You have nothing to prove to anyone by doing it natural. Labor is actually a walk in the park compared to the first few weeks home after giving birth. You will feel pain like never before (engorged breasts, terrified to poop, lack of sleep), but guess what? You'd do it all again (maybe after the baby finally starts sleeping through the night)!!

Congratulations !
I sure can understand your nervousness. I was so afraid of labor, during my first pregnancy, I wouldn't talk about it.
Each delivery is different, even for the same woman.
There are ways to prepare yourself for delivery, to make it a little easier. Walking, even just on a treadmill or up& down stairs, is a great exercise. "Kegel" exercises help. take real good care of yourself. Decide to relax; it is a skill you can learn. Look into alternatives to the awful "strapped-on-your-back"
position; giving birth in a warm pool might be for you -- I have friends who've given birth in a shower, 'cause it was so relaxing -- also some do "gravity birth", which is like the traditional African method of giving birth while standing or squatting; usually while holding on to something like a tree. The idea is to let gravity work FOR you. Sometimes it goes easier if the woman goes on all fours, & pushes in that position ! I learned that from a friend who's had 7 babies. ...as for doing it without meds, it is better for the baby - but consider a local anesthetic. & maybe just a little, little bit of wine..?
And, I'm told an epesiotomy is not as easy to recover from as natural tears, because if there is tearing, it occurs along weak tissues, which will heal and become tougher; but an incision will cut all the tissues, weak or strong, & take longer to recover. I can't speak to that last one personally, though.

I wanted to go through labour without meds. It is your choice. Labour is agony but is well worth it when you hold that tiny bundle of joy in your arms and you forget all about the agony you endured. It can be painful and it can be easier for other women.Best of luck to you.

I had an epideral and me and my child are just fine. Just remember, your body was built for labor. Of course, it does hurt, a lot, but you will be ok. The meds really aren't that bad. It just numbs you waste down and afterwards, you and your baby will just be really sleepy.
Try talking to the nurses in the OB and have them explain your options and what they've seen or tried. You will find something that fits for you. Good luck and remember to breathe!!! :O)

I had both mine without any pain killers. It was TOUGH, but the most empowering thing I've ever done. After both births I felt stronger than at any other time in my life. Crazy, huh? but Fantastic! (just remember millions of women have done this forEVER without pain meds - you can too!)

Having a baby is the worst pain I have ever felt. Why go through the pain if you dont' have too. Get an epdiral. Would you get a tooth pulled without novicain??? Don't go through pain unless you have to.

Each woman and each labor is different.
If you have a low tolerance you should discuss this with your doctor in advance so you can be prepared with or without meds.
I did it in 14 hours without meds.
Very painful....but what I remember most is just being very tired.

Could you???? Yes. But why? Lucky for us...modern medicine has come a long way and child birth no longer has to be dreaded.
You could have a root canal without pain medicine too....but why on earth would you?

It does hurt. That is why they have epidurals. I had one and I am glad I did, so I had more energy after the birth for breastfeeding and healing up after delivery. Epidurals are safe for mother and child. They do not have any effect on brain functioning for either one. It is the best option.
