I have a 2001 cougar and 4 months ago i got my front brake pads changed and the mechanics sais the rotors where good. Last week i washed my rims and my rotors were fine, then 2 days ago i noticed a weird grinding sound as i braked. Today i checked my front drivers side rotor and it is all scratched to ruins. It is only the drivers side though, and it sparks a little bit when braking?? Why is this happening? Is this the mechanics fault?

A stuck caliper will do this. This happens on cars, even new ones, and it's not the machanic's fault. It's usually due to moisture in the brake system.

If the mechanic told you the parts were fine when he did your brakes, believe him. If he felt anything was wrong he would have sold you on more work than just the pads.

In my 35 years or so, I have never seen a stuck caliper. But I have seen the linings come off brand new brake pads after a few days. The glue used to bond the lining to the pad came unbonded. Take it back where you had the work done. Most pads today have a lifetime warranty.

you need to check your brake pads the mechanic may not have replaced the pads and charged you for them. I'm sure the pad is worn for the rotor to be scratched

This is the tell tale sign of a seized up caliper. Will have to have the caliper replaced(recomend both sides), and replacing that bad rotor, and thus new pads. No, the mechanic is not at fault, is it just happened that the caliper failed later.

to no longer subject yet. yet, your brake pads are certainly scratching your rotors. I promise you it gets worse. So, get them checked ASAP and the value is a lot much less to get your rotors "grew to become" than to swap them in the event that they are worn too undesirable. wish this enables.

Your rotor can probably be machined and rebuilt brake calipers are in the $70 range. Rebuilt are as good as new as all they do is put new seals in them.

pads are worn down to bare metal. could be that rotor was warped. don't know why your mechanic didn't notice that? you might get free pads if they where life time but as for the rotor ouch man plus i hope the caliper wasn't sticking..

The mechanic could have messed up your pads and they could have fallen off. Take it back and make them fix it before you make it worse. Or crash.
