Yes the business should be paying them. Now talk to your CPA, you can do this a few different ways. You can have the business cut you a check for services (send them a bill).
Setting it up as a home office might help you out in the long run as far as taxes go. If your wife is helping run the business it needs to be compensating her in some way.
This way the business can still use it as a deduction, instead of paying taxes on the money. If you can claim the income then deduct expenses from it...you are better off.
As far as the fighting...don't know what to tell ya. Maybe he is just stressed.

The business should pay for all expenses incurred for business activity whether these expenses are incurred in your home or in the main office.
These expenses are deductions from the business and should not be deductions from your household income.
I believe your wife is being unreasonable as the expenses are legitimate. What is being served in hiding these expenses from the business? It doesn't give a true picture of what it costs to do business, thus the profits and costing processes are not reflecting the "true" cost to do business.

Back in the 1980's if a business expected you to work from home they supplied you with a computer. Fast forward to 2006-2007 and if you do work at home it is assumed that you have a computer and internet access. Although you stated that there were other expenses involved, I would say with the information that you did provide that you should not expect payment from your wife's family's business.

I read that story. I do have an issue with choosing to work at home and charging the tax payers per Diem when they could have a home cooked meal. Traveling expense reimbursement is designed for when you are forced to eat elsewhere when on company/state business. You don't get per Diem when you go to the office or stay at home.

the next question you have to answer is can the business afford the expense if it cant then they are in serious trouble
