I just watched Akeela the Bee and wanted to know if anyone knows why a bell is used for a wrong answer, but a correct answer gets a verbal affirmation of "That is correct"? Is this just for the movie, or is this the way the spelling bee competition is run?

That is really what they do, although for a correct answer it is usually no response at all. If you here the bell, you know you are wrong, silence means return to your seat.
If you have absolutely nothing better to do, the National Spelling Bee is being played on ESPN2 this month.
