I am a mother of 5 and had this problem with all of my pregnancies. Here are the steps my doctor told me.
1- Sit ON the toilet not IN the toilet.
2- put your feet up on a low stool or a couple of phone books when you are on the toilet.(this will raise your knees a bit making a bowel movement easier.
3-Do NOT strain (this encourages hemorrhoids)
4-Eat plenty of fiber rich foods (whole grains, fruits and veggies)
5-Drink enough fluid
6-If you are still having trouble-speak to your doctor. If you feel very uncomfortable call your doctor right away.

I can't tell you a better way to sit, but I can suggest that you try to avoid the constipation so you don't have to worry about it ;) Ask your OB, and you should be able to take a vegetable laxative, as well as add a little Fiber Sure here and there to your diet. The Fiber Sure is what's really helping me. Also, drink tons and tons of water and be sure you're eating some fruits and veggies every day.
Good luck!

Bring in a stool to put your feet up on while you are sitting and going to the bathroom. It opens things up further and makes pushing more effective. You can also try eating some prunes, or a high fiber cereal every day. Also drink lots of water because constipation can also be caused from being a bit dehydrated.

The best thing I would do is take Colase (stool softener safe for pregnancy) 2 times a day! It doesn't make you have diarrhea or anything it just softens your stool so it comes out easier. When you sit on the toilet for long periods of time you can get hemorrhoids which are really painful! Hope this helps, good luck!

That have been my problem, first you sit like you always do, to help with constipation, you can drink a glass of plum juice, every night, is nasty and it make you pass gas a lot but is better than not going, also eat some more fruits like kiwi, apples and pears, that help too and the mini wheat cereal. Also do some kind of exercises (ask you doctor first)

i have no answer for you but i have put you on my watchlist to see what answers you get. I was in the bathroom for an hour and a half the other night with constipation, I am almost 14 weeks along and when I left i could barely walk i had sat wrong and pulled muscles in my groin. I had to shuffle my feet, couldn;t even pick them up off the floor to walk.

Try sitting ON the toilet instead of IN it. It is usually more comfortable that way.

when pregnant I would sit and rock in a circle which seemed to allow the little bit of extra room for everything to flow naturally :)
