In spite of his work, not much happened. Eventhough it was shown that steralisation saved lives, many were unconvinced. Some doctors, running hospitals, used rigerous cleaning techniques and mortality rates dropped. When these doctors left, the old practices returned, mortality rates increased again but "this was not due to [unsanitary conditions]".

Still, today, new ideas - even those proved to be correct - are hard to get accepted by the medical community. Take the fact that most gastric ulcers are caused by a bacteria - many doctors still don't accept it and treat it as environamentally derived (due to stress and other factors).
