Ahh, yes. Inspiron 6400. I have one too. First of all, you just simply plug the adapter in and start using it. Chances are, the battery is already charged. The battery works much like a PlayStation portable battery- it doesn't develop a memory like other batteries do. You can charge the battery up anytime, anywhere.

I used Core Duo, and I have Core 2 Duo on my 6400. I haven't noticed very much difference. Core duo can't do as much as Core 2. But the difference isn't much; it all depends on how much RAM you have. I have 1GB and my old Core dup has 1GB as well. If you get 2GB or more, then you can do more at once. Although with Core 2 Duo, I've burnt a DVD and played an old game from 1998 at the same time. The game ran choppy, and if it was the only ting happening on the computer, the game ran smooth.

Well you can turn it on at any time - the battery automatically charges and powers the computer at the same time. It will charge faster if its off tho - and when you first open it , its best to let the battery charge to full

Core 2 Duo is an upgrade to the regular Core Duo processor, see the sources for more info.

answer for the second question,
btw duo and 2duo, the difference is in technology,
sure with the same amount of money, you get a faster clock-speed core if you buy duo, but nowadays sth sth GigaHertz doesn't necessarily determine your PC performance anymore, in the old days it used to. The thing about core 2 duo is that it's energy-efficient, I think it detects overheating, it ha an enhanced anti-virus ability. It's a smarter techno, and is said to be the BEST "core" so far
