Your question is excellent, but I don't think anyone can really answer it. Since Vista won't even be released to the public in its final form until January 30, 2007, nobody knows how it will work in terms of speed. According to industry analysts, the final version of Vista that will be released is considerably different than the Beta RC2 that was last tested.

It's also undisputed by Microsoft that Vista will perform an install scan on any computer that is being upgraded. The scan will determine if the computer can support all Vista components such as Aero. If the scan says "NO", the user will not be able to install those components until such time the computer gets more RAM, faster CPU, or whatever the scan dictates.

Q. What is required to run Windows Vista?
A. If you purchased a PC in the last two years, chances are good that you can run Windows Vista. To install and run the core functionality of Windows Vista, you need:
An 800 MHz processor
512 MB of RAM
A 20 GB hard drive with 15 GB of free space
Advanced features, like the new user experience Windows Aero, require advanced or additional hardware.

The key words are "core functionality". I have not been able to find the required specs to run ALL of Vista at MAXIMUM efficiency. So why would someone want to run a watered down version that won't be any better than XP Pro?
