Well, I got a new computer. On the box, it said it has 512 MBs of RAM. But, for some odd reason, when I went to Control Panel>System>General, it said I only had 300-and-something MBs. Is this normal? Was there just a mistake? Did they give me the wrong comp? lol... Any help is appreciated.

The computer assigns some memory to the built in video before Windows starts, so you never see it. 512 is a little low when your video uses that much. Your machine would be much happier with another 512 in there.

Does your computer have onboard video or a video card. If a card is used it will be sideways with the motherboard. If it is onboard it will be right below the mouse and keyboard ports...If its on the mobo your bios is probably set to use 128mb for graphics. So you would only show 384mb on the my computer right clicked. You can go into bios and change it to 8,16,32,64,128 and it will give you more ram. I would look into getting another 512mb stick or even a 1gb stick instead of changing the video ram usage..Thanks

Without a doubt it your on board graphics, solution: Buy graphics card, really not expensive, or buy some more RAM, i would go for the card myself but I'm a bit of a gamer and need it. If your not going to use it for much apart from surfing and a bit of this and that i wouldn't buy anything cos that's enough just now, but for future reference your Operating system is going to get bloated the more you use your computer, downloading this and that, adding the odd application it adds up after a while. go on treat your self get a card and some RAM.

What does it say on the Power On Self Test (POST) screen?
Usually it will show the RAM count before booting.
Many newer machines, particularly the lower priced ones, use 'shared' RAM for the video display.
Many allow anywhere from 16 to 128MB of memory to be allocated to video.
If you have 512MB and allocate 128 to video, your system may show 384MB available.

Go to Control Panel>Display>Settings>Advanced>Adapter.

I think you might find the missing amount of RAM there being used by the display card.

You can change it in the BIOS, I think, if you need more memory.

Or it could be a mistake
