This girl is "adopted" (later in the story you find out that she was given to her adoptive mom by her aunt) and is 10 years old and needs sort of a tomboyish name that is short, boyish and DIFFERENT! im thinking darcy harper (her last name is Hope). What are your ideas??

Samantha-shortened to Sam
or
Maxine shortened to Max
Ricki
Franchesca or Francine shortened to Frankie
Charlene shortend to Charlie
Austin
Andrea shortened to Andy
Alexis, Alexa or Alexandria shortened to Alex
Patricia shortened to Pat
Tyler shortened to Ty or Kyla shortened to Ky
I also always thought Simone would be a good name for a charactor in a novel.
or how about Dalia shortened to Dale!
I just think Darby sounds a little too made up and more for a dog than a person. Sorry, this is just my opinion.
Good luck with your story!

Darby Harper. Good character name - sounds like a gutsy kinda gal - reminds me of Scout from To Kill a Mockingbird.

How about giving her initials only...since her adoptive parents legally changed names to just her initials of her name at birth...and then when she finds out her real mother is her aunt, she finds out the initials stand for a family name or even part of her real mother/aunts name? Like call her K.C. Hope, then find out her real name is Katherine Claire, like her real Mom/Aunt, or M.E. Hope (Emmy Hope) and find out her birth name is Mary Elizabeth or something like that, which is the name of her great grandmother. Another thing you could do, is give her the same name as her unknown biological father. Call her Jamie Harper Hope, then she finds out her biological father's name is James Harper. Her name should somehow be linked to her biological parents, but she doesn't realize it until the mystery of her real parents unravels. Would add an interesting twist to your plot. Good luck with your novel!!

Darby is cute.

No way do I like Cindy for a modern girls name because it is an older person's name.

I once knew a girl named Kirby, and I thought that was the coolest name ever. Darby is cool, too. Something you don't hear every day. I also like Devrie. but that's just me.
