Create a common denominator and add.

Let me do two of them for you:

1 1/2
=2/2 + 1/2 >>> Convert the 1
=3/2

5 1/8
=40/8 + 1/8 >>> Convert the 5
=41/8

Now make a common denominator by multiplying by a form of 1 and since 8 is the common denominator:

3/2 = 4/4 * 3/2 = 12/8

Now do this for the other numbers and add them up.

Are you simply trying to add the numbers:
1 1/2
8 3/4
5 1/8
1 1/4

All you need to do is find a common denominator, which is "8"
So you need to add 12/8 + 70/8 + 41/8 + 10/8
to get (12+70+41+10)/8
= 133/8

Which is 16 5/8
