It won't noticeably affect the speed of your computer UNLESS you're running one of the following:

3D Games
Animation software - 3D animation and stuff
Video editing software - in some cases
Photoshop - when working with very high resolution images(I think)
HD (high definition) video playback

Even if you don't use these, it will speed up a bit anyway if your current graphics card has shared memory(takes some of the system memory to use).

Depending on the one you get, it could speed things a lot. The biggest problem of having the graphics chip set on the Mother Board is that it shares memory with the system RAM which is slighter slower than Graphics memory.

Graphics card and Memory are the two biggest bottle necks of a computer. DO NOT skimp in those areas.

If you are an avid video gamer its a must to have a good card with as much vidram as you can afford! A video card wont speed up your PC tho, it WILL speed up your gaming framerate.
