They come with iLife: http://www.apple.com/ilife/
They also have a text editor called Textedit that can save as Word or RTF files. You can buy Office for the Mac from Microsoft or download free open source versions:

They can also read from and save in Office formats.

No it only comes with a basic text editor. Open office is an option, but i would start asking people where you can get an older copy of microsoft office for macs.
Open office is like microsoft office but it's open source, meaning, anyone can contribute to its design and programming. Some geeks..er..um.. people swear by it. Personally, I don't want any hassles when i'm trying to work so either find someones older version of MS Office 2000/2003 for MACs, or plunk down the ducats for a factory fresh version of MS Ofice 2007 for MACs.

I think it comes with a trial version that you can purchase when the time runs out. It's Microsoft Office for Mac 04.

Yikes! Don't move the Office applications from their installed location. The MUST be in the Applications folder inside the Microsoft Office 2011 folder. They will malfunction if any of them are moved. Instead, make aliases to the applications and put the Aliases wherever you want them. To remove an icon from the dock, hold the mouse button down on the dock icon and then in the pop-up menu choose Options and then uncheck the option for keep in dock.
