keep going east from trabia garden to get to island closest to heaven. the desert prison, and to the west, is the island closest to hell
when you THINK that you're on one, pause the game and go to the menu. the lower corner tells you the name of the land that you're on
it's also easy to tell, because you get in fights a LOT more than normal when you're on those islands. also, obviously, there are tough fights. ruby dragons can be hard, but malboros are the toughest things you'll encounter

I'd say go to google, seach Final Fantasy 8 walkthrouogh and go find it.
