To completely answer your question, you must know where the moisture is coming from. Is it free flowing water through cracks and breaks in the concrete or is ground moisture seeping through the walls? If their are puddles forming on the floor in a relatively short period of time, you may have a big crack in the wall and drainage is seeping in. If their are not any puddles on the floor, it may be ground moisture seeping in through the pores of the concrete. You have a problem and it is not so easy to fix. The best way to keep water from your basement is to keep downspouts clean, put in drains below the basement floor level, french drains on the high side to carry water away, seal the exterior of foundations, and the last resort a sump pump. The sump pump is not going to make the damp air go away. The problem is best solved in warm months. A large concrete walk can help to move water away from the house but ground water is hard to stop.
