out of all the idiotic and smartazz answers, brian has ya covered in doing it the right way. u might get lucky and the claw will be able to get a good bite the 1st time. if the claw cant keep ahold of it, ur only option is to remove the tank and shake the key out. on some bikes, u'll need to remove the seat 1st. drain the tank of as much gas as possible before removing the fuel hose running to the carbs. there might still be gas that the suction hose didnt get, so turn the fuel petcock off before taking the hose off the carb so u wont get any fuel on ur engine or painted parts...gas is very hard on paint.

If its a tank that you cant see strait down into the bottom where you can see the key to grab it with a claw tool, drain the tank, remove it from the bike, turn it upside down, and shake the hell out of it. I have 2 HDs, and a Honda, and like my car keys, the keys are brass so a magnet wont work.

Since bike keys Tend to be non-ferrous (non-magnetic... ahem), I'd probably drain the fuel into a catch can, then look in with a flashlight to see if I could see the key, then use a 3-prong grabber to go after it.
If I Couldn't see it, then I'd remove the tank and move it around till I could see the key. May even turn it upside down and shake till the key came to the opening.
Shortly after that, I'd put the key on a leash attached to either my gear, or maybe my tankbag.

Use a "pick-up" tool. It's a foot or more long and flexible. Spring loaded jaws open and close when using the tool. You can get them or order one at any motorcycle / auto parts store. Here's what they look like.

If you're talking about getting a broken key out of the gas cap lock, take the tank to a locksmith. There's no easy way around that.

First drain the tank of fuel, then, assuming it's on a ring, use a wire with a hook to capture and remove it. Magnet probably won't work since most keys are non ferrous metal.

Try a retrieval magnet (magnet on long handle with pivoting end), Mechanical fingers (flexible shaft with 3-4 "fingers" to grab object).
I they will not work, drain, remove tank, turn upside down, shake like hell!

They make a long three prong claw with a press to open on the end. That or remove the tank and turn it upside down and shake. It's not hard to remove.

A magnet will not pick a key up. Keys are bronze inside with a chrome coating.

well, there are different ways u can get your key out. you either can take your gas tank off if you know how, but make sure u drain your fuel in a container, or u can get a wire that is bendable not to stiff but not to soft then u can try hook it or try get it out, it should work, another is drain your gas, then tip your bike upside down without breaking your motorcycle, good luck!
