They have cooked on (brown) stains and probably have never been cleaned properly. New ones cost $50 so I'm looking for a better way. Please only answer if you've tried something successfully.

If you have a laundry tub, fill it with hot water, add about a cup of bicarbonate of soda, and soak the grates overnight. Then, spray with Ezy-Off or similar non-caustic oven cleaner. Leave that on for about ten minutes & scrub with a nylon bristle brush.
Rinse well. If they are really grotty, you may have to repeat.

Worked for me.

try easy oven, or oven off or something like that.
