unless you don't live in an industrialized nation, the down's would have been diagnosed at least by the birth of your granddaughter if not before. it's not something discovered later.
In addition, kids with down's have a variety of health problems. Some don't have too many, some have severe health problems. All have some medical problems and your granddaughter would already have had appts. dealing with them. A friend of mine has a child with down's and he had 15 medical specialists in his first year of life.

A child with Down syndrome has very distinctive facial features. They are also usually diagnosed at birth (because of this). You would also notice delays in cognitive development because of some level of mental retardation. It is usually very obvious if a child has Down syndrome. If your doctor did not say she had it at birth, I seriously doubt she does. There may be another reason for concern (in which case ask your doctor), or she may just still be learning how to control her tongue. Babies drool, so I wouldn't be too worried.

It is normal for her to keep her tongue out. Babies can be diagnosed with down syndrome at birth. There are several physical features that down syndrome babies have. The chances of it being overlooked for 2 years are pretty slim to none.

She may be tongue tied... the little tag of skin under her tongue can be snipped, easy procedure really. Down Syndrome has many features, such as slanted eyes, a flat bridge across the nose and simian creases on the palms of the hands. Also, there would be two "trenches" in her tongue. Does she lack tone or body strength? Get her doctor to check her tongue, I'm sure he will recognize and features of DS should she have it. Good luck.

I would say no... according to my doctor there has to be more than one sign. Like.......
Short stature, grows slowly and, as an adult, is shorter than average.
Weak muscles, weakabdominal muscles also make the stomach stick out.
A short, wide neck with excess fat and skin.
Short, stocky arms and legs.
Some children also have a wide space between the big toe and second toe.
A single crease across the center of the palms of the hands.

NO!! If a doctor hasn't stated this being a possibility then don't worry about it. Some babies just do this. As they get older they tend to out grow it. Down Syndrome Babies tend to have very distinct features as well. Again if a DOCTOR isn't stating this as a possibility then She is probably fine.

My neice did that. She was slack jawed. It also took her a while to start talking though. I don't really know anything more then that. And children that are down syndrome have a lot of the same facial features. I don't know if that helps, but good luck!

It could be a sign of down syndrome but she may also be teething. You could take her to her pediatrician to find out which one it is. But I wouldn't worry my kids did the same thing when they were younger then they grew teeth.
