Because while a lot of Americans do speak English our country has no official language. Misinformed people believe our official language is English, but that is not the truth. There is no "official language". And if we were to be technical Spain founded America as much as England did (well, almost) and at the same time England did, so there is a likely chance that if America did have an official language it would be Spanish, and not English. Or at the VERY least the official language(s) would be dual language, both Spanish and English and you would be forced to learn both starting in elementary school. Not to mention that a lot of our cities (major and minor) have spanish names. Los Angeles = The Angels... Come on, our country has Spanish roots and you nor anyone else can deny that.

So.

I live in an officially bilingual country (Canada). There are other countries with more than one official language (including but not limited to Belgium, which has 2, French and Flemish, and Switzerland, which has 4, French, German, Italian and Romansch). The US actually has no official language.

Further, if you actually read your Americanhistory, you'll find that in the early years of your country, there actually was a debate on declaring an official language - GERMAN.

The last time that I checked, the US had a large and growing Hispanic population. It also has a very large number of neighbouring countries that are Hispanic. Also, the last time that I checked, the US still has the Statue of Liberty standing in the harbor in NYC, complete with an inscribed poem that includes the lines "give me your tired, your poor, your huddled masses yearning to breathe free". People with attitudes such as yours actually try to suffocate that dream rather than allowing that free breath.

I'd suggest that you try broadening your horizons in order to get rid of your apparent xenophobia.

You have no say in the matter, and this is a "free" country.Like it or not there are many things, that are acceptable in the US, that citizens have no control over.Would you be angry if the national language was Sign Language? There are other english speaking countries in the world who would love to have you as well as other like minded Americans, the truth is freedom is not free, and if Polish were the primary US language i would just have to learn it and move on with my day. We are in a country where men and women of every Race,Creed and Color have the same RIGHTS as you do.

Because a lot of people in this country can't read or speak English and President Bush won't do anything about it because he's torn between being a racist and allowing illegals to keep coming in and stay here because it makes greedy evil corporations rich so they can keep contributing to the Republican party. It's kind of a catch 22.

In the meantime your tax dollars will be used for multi-lingual signs and tax forms and everything else since the new generation of immigrants has much less interest in learning English the way most of our ancestors did and wants nothing to do with actually becoming American except for where collecting benefits they didn't pay for is concerned.

because the government is run by sorry, greedy, and perverted old men who are close to death and know they wont be around to deal with the consequences of thier actions.they can get rich by destroying our country and will check out before they have to wear a poncho and sombrero in the white house.they dont care what they let in this country, thats why the arabs are setting up cells at all the convienience stores.they will be dead or senile before they have to worry about it.we need to close the gates and shoot to kill anyone trying to get over the wall.the mexicans and the arabs are taking jobs away from native born americans.its not our job to support them and they need to be deported a.s.a.p.! we need to search house to house-construction sites to the taco joints, from the temples to the flea markets and round them up,check thier green cards, and if they have none ...load them on the bus with an armed guard and send them back over the border where they belong.this is not mexico and we dont need anything in spanish!have some balls mr.Bush and run thier sorry as-es off!!!

Well, last time I checked, I lived in Sydney, Australia.

There are very few Spanish speakers here, a small Chilean community, but the rest are tourists.

Multiculturalism adds enlightenment, diversity, varied cultural experiences and should be a harmonious system where everyone feels validated.

Maybe we should all learn to speak the indigenous tounges, like Cherokee, Seminole, Comanche, et cetera. Those and more languages were spoken before Europeans with their English language took over, and everyone was forced to learn it. Besides, lots of our country was founded by Spaniards, Texas (formerly 'Tejas') in particular.
If you want to live in a country where pretty much the only language is English, try England.

There is a smallish size city near me in Texas called "Farmers Branch" and they had a city vote to make English the official language and to make it ILLEGAL to rent apartments or employ illegal immigrants.

The Latino community threw a fit, but it was not overturned. I think it is fine to expect people to become citizens if they want to work or live here. If I went to their country, they would expect that from me.

I speak english, spanish, french, italian, and a little japanese and mandarin chinese. and yes it helps me a lot in a nice job that pays well. Stop whining and instead of b!tching about it, use the situation to your advantage. What you are really worked up about is the fear of losing your way of life. Hey pal, the only constant in this world is change... over 6 billion people in the world and you think your version of the American way will last forever?
