I've had mine for years, but I believe the minimum the piercer suggested was 4 or 6 wks, but he said the longer I left the original in, the better. I ended up waiting about 4 months I think, but just because I had no desire/reason to change it prior to that.

Didn't your piercer give you instructions on care and when it was okay to change it? They should have.

It can take up to a year to completely heal. When you do change it use good quality jewelry. The cheap stuff can irritate it, especially if you end up having any kind of metal allergy (esp to nickle, which is common).

Do a search online for navel piercing and read the after-care instructions posted. You'll get a good idea there of the amount of time commonly suggested to leave the original in.

When you get it done you need to leave it in for two to three weeks then you can take it out and put s new ring in. Since you have had it for a months you can. Make sure that it is clean and sanitized.

If it were red and swollen, you have got an infection.
